This is a question The In Laws

My Mother in law has a habit of "gifting". She will take crap she doesn't want anymore and hide it around our house when she visits. Tell us your tales of the In Laws.

My ex in-laws had the strangest method of ensuring they knew the whereabouts of the TV remote control.

They kept it on top of the TV.

So, when they changed a channel, they'd have to get up out of their chair, go to the TV, change the channel, replace the remote on top of the TV and go sit down.
Thick as a whale omelette

Member when TVs had only a few channels, eh, and so you could fit all the buttons in a row next to the screen, thus negating the need for a remote, member?

I member when you just had a tuning dial like on a radio
no need for buttons on that telly it had three small knobs for on/volume brightness and contrast and one nick big knob with a shiny end that you had to fiddle about with to get stuff to come up on the screen.

I'm not that old
My parents just had a really old black and white telly that I had in my room in 1988. I thought all ZX Speccy games were greyscale until I snuck it downstairs one day and hooked it up to the colour tv.

Yeah, I only remember it because of my nan's old b&w set.
Big chunky switches on the family TV at home.

Dr Who
The music used to fascinate our dog, and she'd stand up and put her paws near the speaker and drag all the sliders to the bottom. It got trippy.

Ooh, I member...

The present Mrs Pooflake had a portable TV with buttons like that in her bedroom before the dark times...before she met me.

She fashioned a makeshift remote by gaffa-taping two of those fucking long bamboo pole doo-dahs used for growing tomatoes and putting a blob of bluetac on the end. Problem solved.

Resourceful* woman.

*or just lazy.

We had a telly like that when we were in uni. We just used a pool cue.

My mum bought a Soviet TV
Somehow, despite living in Western Europe in the 1980s, my mum bought a TV that I swear was made in Russia.

It had a (wired) remote control, which consisted of a computer mouse with one button. This enabled you to change channels upwards by pressing the button. When you got past channel 10, it went back to 1 again.

I just couldn't get through to them the idea of a 'remote' control
Y'know - where you can change channel without going to the TV. Tried to explain, might as well have been speaking Martian.
